Borussia Dortmund – Real Madrid: The underdogs against the giants

Borussia Dortmund have been quite a surprise this season but the upcoming semifinals will prove to be very challenging for them. The facts speak for themselves when it comes to Real’s superiority over Borussia. Their records concerning German visitors include 18 wins, 3 draws and only 2 loses. Furthermore their key player, Cristiano Ronaldo has been responsible for 14 goals during his last 10 League games. It would seem that Santiago Bernabeu is quite lucky for the Castilian players as they won the last seven Champions League games that were played here. On the other hand Borussia have only won 2 of their last 7 away matches. Their confrontations on Spanish grounds haven’t been very successful either as they only won 1 game lost 5 and obtained a draw in 2.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s comeback is good news for Real Madrid. Although Marcelo, Khedira and Fabio Coentrao remain out of the game, the Spanish have a pretty good selection of players. Borussia Dortmund on the other hand is dreading the possibility that captain Sebastian Kehl might not be able to play due to recent injuries. However the German captain seems to be quite capable of playing after having a special facial mask fitted. Furthermore the German team has some top players that should be taken very seriously. Polish player Robert Lewandowski is a fearless striker. Mario Gotze and Marco Reus could also pose a threat to the Spanish.

Although Borussia has improved their style a lot in the last years, one can’t help but wonder if they have what it takes to be a real threat to Real Madrid. As if having Cristiano Ronaldo on their side wasn’t enough, the Spanish also benefit from the help of one of the best coaches in the world, Jose Mourihno. However their strategies are not perfect, a fact that is well reflected in their incapability of keeping the opposition out. Although Cristiano Ronaldo is believed to be as gifted as Barcelona’s Messi, he might still encounter some difficulties dealing with Polish right-back Lukasz Piszczek. He was a big contributor to the team’s victory against Malaga. His concentration is essential for a balanced game, as Christiano is sure to take advantage of any opportunity.

Borussia Dortmund is a promising team but ultimately they are too inexperienced for dealing with a giant like Real Madrid. If the Spanish manage to win this season’s Champion’s League they will be able to brag with a record of 10 won League competitions.
